NOOR ISLAND – REALMS OF IMAGINATION ARCHITECTURE BEYOND PRAGMATISM
With its two layers, the Butterfly Pavilion reconciles opposites. It is at one and the same time organic and geometric, dynamic and at rest, perforated and sealed. The shape and material swirl to create a complex holistic experience. Parametric, Pavillion, Opposites, Architecture Building

The shadows of flowers make their way across the floor and walls. Images of the ornamental roof blend with the floral patterns of the plants that appear to be growing out of the floor in the tropical house. Architecture merges with nature to create something new, an › archinature ‹, which adopts Arab ornamentation and building traditions just as much as foliage and tendrils. In seinem Inneren wächst künstlicher tropischer Regenwald. Timber Architecture, Flower Ceiling, Man Made Island, Space Frame

The metal roof forms an initial sheath, which envelops the Butterfly Café like an organic shadow, its floral adornments once again referencing the ornament as a structural element. The crystalline Butterfly Pavilion is located in the middle of the room, which has hardly any supporting columns. With its six-metre glass struts, the polygonal corpus forms a highly transparent counterpoint to the perforated protective metal sheath. Pavilion Architecture, Metal Facade

Once-dead nature now springs back to life again, visitors become aware of fluid energy and of movements such as the flow of chlorophyll, things that would otherwise never enter their minds. Figures that are a cross between real graphics and artificial particle generators travel across trees and bushes, particularly close to the island’s source of growth and energy. Butterfly Garden, Modern Architecture

The steel supporting structure is secured by a continuous, 3D edge girder, which absorbs the strain on the roof, and by a network of nodes and triangular connections. Posada, Light And Shadow, Star Shape

The challenge with the steel elements, which were calculated using the finite element method (FEM), was to systemise the 4 000 individual nodes theoretically required in such a way that ultimately only 600 were needed to achieve the correct balance between variation and effectivity. Sunshades, Ceiling Fan

We are looking at points of transitional experiences that cannot be placed in one particular category. And thus the way people look at things changes when their eyes focus on strangely shaped trees and carefully arranged succulents and cacti, sculptures and pavilions that transcend the boundaries between nature, horticulture and architecture. The load-bearing steel structure and the aluminium petals, which are only three millimetres in thickness, converge at every node, adopting a large number of different angle brackets at several levels. Thus a flickering roof of petals emerges, beneath which connections and screw joints run invisibly. Angle Bracket, Facade Architecture
