John Singer Sargent - This has always been a favorite of mine. it is such a departure from his (lovely) Edwardian ladies dressed in fabulous gowns. This painting shows movement as opposed to his standing, sitting or reclining rich women. This woman smiles with warmth rather than distant and cold beauty.

During his career he created approximately 900 oil paintings and more than 2000 watercolours, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings.
