The Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet is a school of classical ballet in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Established in 1738 during the reign of Empress Anna, the academy was known as the Imperial Ballet School up until Soviet times, when, after a brief hiatus, the school was re-established as the Leningrad State Choreographic Institute.

I think photos of ballerinas are powerful and elegant. The focus on their bodies and form show a strength of the dancer. I was drawn to the lighting of this photo and how it moves the eyes from the tutu down to the arches of her feet. The backdrop is muted out to focus on the dancer and shines on her to outline her body.
