James Warren "Jim" Jones (May 13, 1931 – November 18, 1978) was an American cult leader. Jones was the founder and leader of the Peoples Temple, best known for the mass murder-suicide in November 1978 of 918 of its members in Jonestown, Guyana, the murder of Congressman Leo Ryan, and the ordering of four additional Temple member deaths in Georgetown, the Guyanese capital. Nearly three-hundred children were murdered at Jonestown, almost all of them by cyanide poisoning.

Jonestown Massacre - The day before the mass suicide,Congressman Leo Ryan & other US officials landed in Guyana to determine whether or not US citizens were being held against their will. During their visit, many of the cult members asked to leave with his delegation. At the airport, they were ambushed. A cult member shot the passengers. Also, the cult sent a small force and attacked the delegation. Ryan was a victim becoming the 1st & only Congressman killed in the line of duty in US history.
