ECU Sculpture: December 2010 Alberto Giacometti settled and worked mostly in Paris. He embraced Surrealism in 1930 on meeting Andre Breton. Was interested in the intellectual aspects of Existentialism and studied in their circle with leader Jean-Paul Sartre. In 1935, Giacometti was forced out of the Surrealist movement and began to develop his own style of unusual, ghostly figure paintings. His sculpture contained the same abstract elements, most notably his bronze statue, Thin Man.
