A belt was only worn underneath. Note the slit to allow your hand through to the purse on your belt. This dress was used as a burial shroud in the frozen graveyard at Herjolfsnes, Greenland. Very well preserved, it is dated to the 14th century.  The design & photo was published in the 1924 journal article "Buried Norsemen at Herjolfsnes" by Dr. Poul Norfund in the journal  Meddelelser om Gronland.
