Salvia darcyi
(syn: Salvia oresbia) This species from Mexico was renamed and officially published by England's James Compton in a 1994 issue of "Kew." It was originally discovered in Galeana, Mexico, by Yucca Do Nursery collectors who unfortunately received no credit in the magazine. When given plenty of room and bright light, Salvia darcyi makes a huge 4' tall x 7' wide clump of heart-shaped, light green leaves. Throughout the summer, the clump is topped by spikes of bright orange-red flowers (RHS 43A)…
Salvia wagneriana | plant lust
Commanding Winter bloominess Big bold Salvia wagneriana bursts into a massive display of large bright rosey-red blooms 6-7 long. I find it amazing this long blooming Sage is so rare in the nursery trade. Its an excellent solution for any area that requires something large easy deer proof & resplendent It can reach 10 x 10 across but for a smaller show I cut it back to the ground after its finished blooming & again sometime in Summer to about 3 tall. Bloom spikes are rather spear shaped with…
Salvia microphylla San Carlos Festival
This 1997 Yucca Do introduction was discovered 5 years earlier in Tamaulipas, Mexico, in the village of San Carlos at 3,800'. Salvia microphylla 'San Carlos Festival' was the best of a population in full flower in October. This compact grower (2' tall x 3' wide) has proven to be the most floriferous selection we have grown in our gardens. The clump is adorned with hundreds of red-violet (RHS 66A) flowers celebrated by hummingbirds from early May through November here in NC...superb!
Salvia Phyllis Fancy
I never expected to have a salvia that shaded out buddleias, but such is the case with Salvia 'Phyllis Fancy'. Named for Phyllis Norris, this wonderful seedling, thought to be a hybrid between Salvia leucantha and possibly Salvia chiapensis, occurred at the University of California Santa Cruz Arboretum. It is similar but larger and hardier than Salvia 'Waverly' and has been perennial to 8 degrees F in our trials. The 7' tall clumps are only 1' wide at the bottom but have a 7' wide spread at…
Salvia greggii Texas Wedding
(aka: Salvia greggii 'Alba') This plant had been tossed around the country for years without a legitimate cultivar name, so in 2006 we officially christened it Salvia greggii 'Texas Wedding'. Salvia greggii 'Texas Wedding' is a very hardy, upright sub-shrub to 2' tall x 2' wide. Adorning the deer-resistant woody stems and small, narrow, evergreen leaves are masses of hummingbird-attracting white flowers produced continuously from late spring into fall, except for a floral slow-down in the…

Salvia greggii Lipstick
Salvia 'Lipstick' is one of the longest-flowering and best-performing Texas sage cultivars we have trialed. In our garden, it begins flowering in early May and continues through November. Each compact 3' tall x 3' wide clump of Salvia greggii 'Lipstick' is simply smothered in terminal flower spikes of lipstick-red (RHS 50A) flowers, each highlighted by a white throat and brown calyx...a hummingbird fiesta.
