Genesis tells of Adam and Eve who partook of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. Upon eating the fruit, they were thrust out of God's presence and had to live by the sweat of their own brow in a fallen world. As Renaissance  painters were influenced by Greek mythology, they began portraying the fruit as an apple.
