In Greek mythology Apollo, the son of Zeus fell in love with Daphne, daughter of river god Peneus. Apollo's affections were unrequited and in a desperate attempt to end his pursuit, Daphne turned herself into a Laurel tree. Apollo wore a Laurel wreath as a symbol of his affection for his lost love.
