The cookiecutter shark (Isistius brasiliensis), also called the cigar shark, is a species of small dogfish shark in the family Dalatiidae. This shark occurs in warm, oceanic waters worldwide, particularly near islands, and has been recorded from as deep as 3.7 km (2.3 mi).

We recently added three spiny dogfish sharks to the Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit, and will be releasing two in the near future! These sharks are aggressive and have a reputation of relentlessly pursuing their prey--though we don't have to worry about this on exhibit, where our animals are well fed by aquarists.
