NGC 1499: The California Nebula Credit & Copyright: Markus Noller (Deep Sky Images) What's California doing in space? Drifting through the Orion Arm of the spiral Milky Way Galaxy, this cosmic cloud by chance echoes the outline of California on the west coast of the United States. Our own Sun also lies within the Milky Way's Orion Arm, only about 1,500 light-years from the California Nebula. Also known as NGC 1499, the classic emission nebula is around 100 light-years long.

Global Puzzle

What's California doing in space? Drifting through the Orion Arm of the spiral Milky Way Galaxy, this cosmic cloud by chance echoes the outline of California on the west coast of the United States.

Inside the Orion Nebula: OMG!!! This blows my mind. In the words of Carl Sagan, "We are made of star stuff", lucky us!

The Great Nebula in Orion, an immense, nearby starbirth region, is probably the most famous of all astronomical nebulas. Here, glowing gas surrounds hot young stars at the edge of an immense interstellar molecular cloud only 1500 light-years away

The Whirlpool Galaxy

The Whirlpool Galaxy, a classic spiral galaxy, is pictured in this NASA handout photo. At only 30 million light years distant and fully 60 thousand light years across, also known as NGC is one of the brightest and most picturesque galaxies on the sky.

The Tulip in the Swan. The complex and beautiful nebula is shown here in a composite image that maps emission from ionized sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms into red, green, and blue colors. Ultraviolet radiation from young, energetic O star HDE 227018 ionizes the atoms and powers the emission from the Tulip Nebula.
