Erik Erikson was an ego psychologist that patterned his theories after Freud. Erikson strongly felt that culture and society have an effect on the ego and that a struggle or conflict can begin. Erik Erikson designed a model of development that has 5 stages of psychosocial development that extend through childhood.

This table represents the stages of development as dictated by Erik Erikson. I believe that it is important to remember when analyzing Erikson's stages that although they are termed "Psycho-social crisis" they are actually "significant turning points in life that made indivdiuals more vulnerable than usual, and therefore presented them with opportunities for enhancing their potential.
