History of Ireland (1801 - 1923)  Ireland opened the 19th century still reeling from the after effects of the Irish Rebellion of 1798.  In 1800 the Irish Parliament and the Parliament of Great Britain passed the Act of Union. Ireland faced considerable economic difficulties in the 19th century, including the Great Famine of the 1840s.
