Glenn Miller (1904-1944) was an American jazz musician (trombone), arranger, composer, and bandleader in the swing era. He was one of the best-selling recording artists from 1939 to 1943, leading one of the best known "Big Bands". While he was traveling to entertain U.S. troops in France during World War II, Glenn Miller's plane disappeared in bad weather over the English Channel.

US Army Major Glen Miller gave 800 performances with his Army Air Force Band in less than a year.  He worked tirelessly to build morale and bring comfort through music.  He even recording messages in German to reach out to those on the other side.  His plane disappeared without a trace over the English Channel in 1944, and he was declared missing in action.
