Originally owned by Queen Therese of Bavaria, Princess of Saxe-Hildburghausen (b.1792-1854) who bequested the jewels to her second son, King Otto of Greece, Prince of Bavaria (b.1832-1862). As he and his wife, Queen Amalia of Greece, Princess of Oldenburg b.(1818-1875), were childless these jewels were handed down to the king’s nephew, Prince Ludwig Ferdinand of Bavaria (b.1859-1949), thence by descent. The parure his known within the family as the ‘Queen Amalia Parure’.

Alexandra was born in Schloss Johannisburg in Aschaffenburg, the eighth child and fifth daughter of King Ludwig I of Bavaria and of his wife Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. As a girl her portrait was painted by Joseph Karl Stieler for the "Gallery of Beauties" which her father commissioned at Schloss Nymphenburg.

Queen Charlotte of England, faithful (and patient!) wife of (the mad) King George III - and rumored to be Britain's first (partially) Black queen, tracing her lineage to an African branch of the Portuguese royal family. Many cite this painting as proof of her African features, while some historians disagree. The devil is certainly in the (facial) details.

Queen Charlotte of England and Ireland. [Princess] Sophie Charlotte born in 1744. She was the first Black Queen of England. She was the eighth child of the Prince of Mirow, Germany, Charles Louis Frederick, and his wife, Elisabeth Albertina of Saxe-Hildburghausen. In 1752, when she was eight years old, Sophie Charlotte's father died. As princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Sophie Charlotte was descended directly from an African branch of the Portuguese Royal House, Margarita de Castro y Sousa.
