James Douglas Morrison was born to future Rear Admiral George Morrison and Clara Morrison. He had a sister, Anne Robin and brother, Andrew Morrison. He was of Irish and Scottish descent. His brother, Andy, explained that his parents had never used physical corporal punishment such as spanking. They instilled discipline by the military tradition known as dressing down. This consisted of yelling at and berating the children until they were reduced to tears and acknowledged their failings.
