He also painted several portraits of his patroness, Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, also known as Madame de Pompadour (1721–1764), the official chief mistress of Louis XV. A patron of the arts, science and literature, she sponsored many painters and writers, including Voltaire. “Après nous, le déluge.”
