She also traveled with Duke Ellington's & Lionel Hampton's bands, sang at the Chicago Playboy Club, & appeared in several stage plays including James Baldwin's Blues for Mister Charlie. She  volunteered for NASA to recruit minorities. Astronaut Dr Mae Jemison & Comedian/Actress Whoopi Goldberg cites Nichols as career inspirations.

Best known for playing Lieutenant Uhura, the communications officer on the original ‘Star Trek’ television series, Nichelle Nichols is one of the first African-American women to be cast in a role other than stereotyped black maid or nanny.
