The medieval lockup in Stafford, Staffordshire, England. This single-cell "gaol" (as "jail" was spelt until the 20th Century in Great Britain) was typical of Elizabethan England and would have held prisoners awaiting public torture or execution in front of crowds in Stafford's town centre. The old gaol was replaced in the 17th century and became a storage shed before being preserved as a historic site.
