Theobald Theodor Friedrich Alfred von Bethmann Hollweg (29 November 1856 – 1 January 1921) was a German politician and statesman who served as Chancellor of the German Empire from 1909 to 1917.

July 6, 1914: Germany promises Austria a 'blank cheque' of support. In response to the letters of appeal from their Austrian counterparts, German officials, led by the country's chancellor Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg  (seen here addressing the national parliament) pledged to back Austria-Hungary. They gave their allies what became known as a "blank cheque" of support, encouraging Austria to consider a military response to the assassination.
