Paul Ludwig Ewald von Kleist (8 August 1881 – 13 November 1954) was a leading German field marshal during World War II. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords (German: Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub und Schwertern). The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and its higher grade Oak Leaves and Swords was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership.

Ewald-Heinrich von Kleist-Schmenzin (10 July 1922 – 8 March 2013) was a German Army officer and publisher. Later appt by Stauffenberg for political rep in the Stettin military dist for the coup was arrested on July 21, 1944 after coup failed. It is etimated that 4,980 Germans were executed after the July Plot. Hitler decided that the leaders should have a slow death. They were hung with piano wire from meat-hooks. Their executions were filmed and later shown to senior members of both the NSDAP and the armed forces.  In March 2013, the last surviving member of the plot - Ewald-Heinrich von Kleist-Schmenzin - died in Munich.

But Lt. von Kleist was not. Mr. von Kleist was questioned by the Gestapo, placed in a concentration camp for a time & then returned to service. He never understood why. Mr. von Kleist had deep roots in the plot against Hitler.
