"Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari" , 1920 Silent horror film directed by Robert Wiene from a screenplay by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer. It is one of the most influential of German Expressionist films. The film used stylized sets, with abstract, jagged buildings painted on canvas backdrops and flats. To add to this strange style, the actors used an unrealistic technique that exhibited jerky and dancelike movements. This movie is cited as having introduced the twist ending in cinema.

Nosferatu. 1922 silent classic, and hands down, the creepiest movie you will ever see. Guaranteed.

Aguirre, the Wrath of God (Werner Herzog, 1972) German design

Aguirre, the Wrath of God (Werner Herzog, German design. Amazing film - a must see.

Aguirre, Wrath of God (Werner Herzog, 1972), Herzog's first collaboration with Klaus Kinski, who plays a ruthless leader of a Spanish expedition through the Amazon. My favorite film of all time, and recently discovered, in the book 1491, that the monk's diary the film is based on is more true than earlier historians had believed.
