Helgoland (or Heligoland) was once part of the British Empire

SMS Ostfriesland was the second vessel of the Helgoland class of battleships of the German Imperial Navy. Named for the region of East Frisia, Ostfriesland's keel was laid in October 1908 at the Kaiserliche Werft dockyard in Wilhelmshaven. She was launched on 30 September 1909 and was commissioned into the fleet on 1 August 1911. They destroyed 14 bombers; four were very badly damaged, and the remaining four were less badly damaged. One of the destroyed bombers was a Wellington Mk I, N2936, LF-J of 37 RAF Squadron which was shot down into the sea close to the German coast, most probably by Oberstleutnant Carl Schumacher…

RAF reconnaissance photo of Wilhelmshaven German Naval Base, 1939-December 1939 saw three attacks on the important German naval base at Wilhelmshaven and the nearby anchorage in the Schillig Roads (The Heligoland bight is the area between the German coast and the then heavily fortified island of Heligoland in the north sea). On 3 December 24 Wellingtons sank one minelayer and shot down one German fighter for no lose.
