Flannel Friday: Groundhog's Shadow

Since next week is Groundhog's day I am planning a Shadow themed story time. If you are not familiar with Groundhog's Day it is celebrated every year on Feb. 2nd in the US and Canada. Those of us living in a cold, dreary climate watch to see if a groundhog - most notably Punxsutawney Phil of Pennsylvania - pops out of his hole to see his shadow. If he sees his shadow he will be spooked back into his hole for another six weeks of winter. If he does not see a shadow he will emerge from…

Shel Silverstein's "Snowball"

Shel Silverstein's "Snowball" was the subject of a recent Flannel Friday post from Miss Alison Is Blogging. I thought it would be fun to end Monday's Winter Family Story Time program with his irreverent humor. (I am also using "Snowball, Snowball" from so tomorrow. Thank you Flannel Friday!) Instead of making it a board story, I decided to make some illustrations and glue them on to construction paper. I made the pajamas and bedspread with scrap book paper to add a little pattern to my very…

Feltboard Dragon

A little late for Chinese New Year, but I've been working on this latest felt project for a while. I borrowed the pattern from Phee McFaddell's craft website. The original dragon was done in green and blue. I decided to try red. I'm not sure about the red color. He looks a bit like a Welsh dragon. (Not that there's anything wrong with that! It just wasn't quite the look I was going for.) This is quite a different style than most of my other felt pieces. I kind of wish that he had wings. I…

Flannel Friday: There Was a Little Penguin

My love affair with penguins began years ago when I was teaching my very first preschool classes. I used to visit my local library every week to collect new books (on our weekly themes) for my class to enjoy. This particular day, I was looking for books on individuality. Boy, did I find the perfect one! It was: I was IN LOVE from the very first page! Tacky was AWESOME! He was cute and cuddly but, best of all, he was DIFFERENT! I took Tacky to my classroom and he soon became everyone's…

Mittens Our Earth theme

Flannel Friday: Winter Post #3: Mittens

This is my third Winter Flannel Friday post. The previous ones focused on penguins and snowflakes - today's theme is mittens! I've got two main ideas for using these mittens. The first I picked up at Staff Day from the coordinator of youth services for my library system. It's sung to the tune of Six Little Ducks, and goes like this: Colorful mittens for me and you Red ones, yellow ones, blue ones too. But the one pair of mittens that rhymes with head, They're my favorite mittens, and their…

My Storytime Life: Flannel Friday! A Winter Story

Flannel Friday! A Winter Story

Every once in a while, I will embark on a challenging flannel story to make. The following story I created last winter, when, here in Connecticut it literally never stopped snowing. This story is adapted from: A treasury of flannelboard stories / by Jeanette Graham Bay. Allyside Press, 1995. The flannel figure patterns are from that same book! Once upon a time, it snowed. And snowed, and snowed. And snowed, and snowed. Everyone was so happy to see the snow. The children couldn't wait to go…

Flannel Friday

I do a twenty minute toddler storytime for kids 18 months to three years and a half hour preschool storytime for kids three to five every Tuesday and Thursday. I wanted to share my recent Lunar New Year storytime. I was inspired to make some Chinese lanterns from the pictures in the Oriental Trading Company catalog, but I could not find a five Chinese Lanterns rhyme. I ended up adapting a rhyme I found on Amazon. Five Chinese Lanterns (tune: I'm a little tea pot) One Chinese lantern shining…

Three Little Kittens flannel story

Three Little Kittens

I love mittens, and today is a mitten day! So, here are my three little kittens, who lost their mittens, found their mittens, ate pie in their mittens and got them dirty, and washed their mittens to make mother dear happy. I start with just the plain kittens on the flannelboard, then when they find their mittens, I put them on their front paws and give them their pie. The pictures below are the kittens, in their mittens, with goo from the pie on them. Then I take off the mittens, remove the…
