c. 1890 The label in the coat is from J. L. David & Bro., Charleston, S.C., a prominent men’s tailor on King Street for many years. Joshua L. David (1856-1942) took over the business from his father in 1877, when it was the smallest store in town. By 1920, when he sold the store and stock, it was the largest outfitting store for men and women in South Carolina. This suit was worn by Christopher Schultz Gadsden (1834-1915) of Summerville.
