The beauty of brioche knitting is how simple it is. Slip a stitch, yarn over, then knit that combo together on the next row. But did you know that’s just the tip of the iceberg? Half-brioche, syncopated brioche, interrupted brioche, fluffy brioche, and many more—all derive from the same basic brioche stitch with minor adjustments. The brioche stitch is all over Ravelry and Pinterest these days, so I was puzzled to discover I’m one of the very few people on the Interweave staff who actually knits brioche. “Too fiddly,” said one colleague. “Complicated,” said another. Nonsense.

I have been a knitter for over 25 years now and have tried several things but Brioche knitting was something that just did not interest me too much.  I think because many of the finished projects that came across my social networks were in color palettes that just did not appeal to me.  I also am not excited about knitting a 1x1 rib, which is what brioche looks like.  Also I have heard it is very difficult.  But I decided to give it a try and I think I am hooked!   My first attempt was One Color Brioche Knitting Patterns, Knit Stitch Patterns, Loom Knitting, Knitting Stitches, Free Knitting, Crochet Patterns, Two Color Knitting Patterns, Brioche Pattern, Cowl Patterns

Brioche creates a fully reversible fabric and gives a very different effect from regular knits and purls. I have tried it a few times from reading different tutorials but I didn't have much success. But my friend Meaghan at the Unapologetic Knitter has put together an AMAZING video series on how to brioche knit.

Brioche knitting has a reputation for being one of the most complicated techniques in knitting. And while there are quite a few ways in which brioche knitting can be a bit challenging, most of the hype around this knitting technique comes from the unique terminology that's used for brioche. The new words and stitches can even make the most experienced knitters a little confused from time to time. What do barking and burping have to do with knitting? Once you get past the strange terminology…
