It happens when too much water (a bead of water) or when new water (an additional wet brush stroke) causes too much wetness to collide with a wash that is already drying. The additional water lifts pigment from the drying surface and pushes it out, much like waves depositing bubbles on the shore. The lifted pigment then settles on the outer edge of the water line, creating a bloom/cauliflower/backrun. When done mindfully, blooms can be placed in such a way as to enhance a painting. But they are often considered mistakes when they happen due to carelessness and ruin the wash wherever they pop up. How to avoid unwanted blooms?
