A Nordic Nook - Fine Homebuilding
This sweet built-in dual bed featuring Norwegian craftsmanship is found in a delightful house on an island off the coast of Maine. Actually designed and built in Norway in the mid 1950's and transported over here piece by piece, the house is unique and a joy to be in. With Nordic influences throughout, including a sod roof, carved wooden columns, and other details that speak of comfort and shelter in harsh winters, the house fits in nicely on Maine's rugged coast.

A box-bed is a bed enclosed in furniture that looks like a cupboard, half-opened or not.The box-bed is closed on all sides by panels of wood. One enters it by removing curtains, opening a door hinge or sliding doors on one or two slides. In front of the box-bed was often a large oaken chest, with the same length as the bed. This was the 'seat of honour,' and served also as a step for climbing into the bed. It was also used to store clothing, underwear and bedding the rest of the time

Cozy Alcove Beds
When I was little I desperately wanted a cozy bedroom nook to call my own — a room within a room where I could close the doors or curtains and be in a tiny world of my own. But for the rest of us, there is something so inherently cozy about being in a bed enclosed on at least three sides.
