(Ministry of Defense) 11 October 1956: At 3:27 p.m., local time, (05:57 GMT) a Mk.1 Atom Bomb, code-named Blue Danube, detonated at approximately 490 feet (150 meters) over the Kite Site on the Maralinga Test Range, South Australia. Ed Coates writes: Looks like a Defiant, doesn't it? Well, the Hotspur was actually a Henley converted to meet the same spec (F9/35) as the Defiant. However, by the time that the Hotspur was completed (1938) the Defiant had already flown, and contracts already let to Boulton & Paul, hence the entire Hotspur project was abandoned. In any case, Hawkers were far too busy ramping up for Hurricane production at the time. Just as well, since the turret fighter concept was a dismal failure. K8309…
