Karel Appel, Untitled. 1955. Oil on canvas. 100 x 72 cm. From the end of the 1940s, Karel Appel orientated himself artistically towards children's drawings. He appropriated the naïve unselfconsciousness and unrestrained fantasy with which children express themselves through painting and took on also the childish imagery. The depictions of all sorts of animals interacting with each other or with human beings belong to the most frequent motifs in his work. Lot 73, Auction 1155
Karel Appel, Untitled (Portrait d'un Homme). 1969. Acrylic and collage on canvas. 162 x 122 cm. Lot 5, Auction 904
Karel Appel, Nue. 1961. Oil on canvas. 130 x 97 cm. In the early 1960s, Karel Appel worked on a series of female nudes to which the painting on offer pertains. This sitting nude is a particularly powerful example of the series. Appel portrays the woman as a mysterious being, reduced to head, breasts and parted legs, the face darkly alienated. The figure is formed entirely by the paint in an impulsive creative process. Lot 155, Auction 1162

Gerhard Richter, 11. Jan. 2000 (Firenze). 2000. Oil on colour photograph. 12 x 12 cm. Gerhard Richter overpainted the photographs by dragging the picture plane across the not yet dried paint on the wide squeegee with which he had previously worked on the large-scale paintings. Due to the overpainting, the photographic depiction becomes more intense and provides the observer with further possibilities of perception. Lot 128, Auction 1162

Oil on canvas. 100 x 115 cm. The overwhelming majority of Maria Lassnig's works are self-portraits. She chooses the investigation of her own body and its constantly changing sensibilities as the decisive artistic theme, as it is literally the closest thing to her - more than any other subject of the outside could ever be. She is not motivated by narcissism, but quite the opposite, by merciless self-exploration. Auction 1155, Lot 16.
