Bosom Pals. Vasily Konovalenko (koh-noh-vuh-len-koh) was born in 1929 in Petrivka, Ukraine. His gem carvings for a local ballet earned rave reviews, and he became smitten with the art form. He left his homeland around 1974 when American wholesale diamond dealer Jack Ortman saw the sculptures and offered him a house in the U.S. His magnificent gem carvings are on display at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the only collection of Konovalenko's sculptures on display outside of Moscow.
