Daytona, 1971: Mark Donohue in his Penske Ferrari 512M followed by eventual winner Pedro Rodriguez in his Gulf Porsche 917K. Donohue and David Hobbs had the fastest car, but were rear-ended in a late-night accident. They eventually finished third. This was the end of an era for the 917 and 512. The FIA had outlawed the big 5-liter cars for the 1972 season instead restricted all cars to 3-liters.:
