The old State Asylum in Traverse City Michigan - today it has been restored with shops, condos, & restaurants in order to preserve this magnificent historic structure. It is actually a series of buildings and one of the few remaining Kirkbride structures.

Weston State Hospital: One of the scariest haunted hospitals. The hospital is the second largest hand cut stone building in the United States. The hospital was built to hold 250 mentally ill patients. In 1950 the patients numbered 2400. Many were tormented, tortured and believed to be murdered there. Charles Manson once was a resident there. The asylum closed in 1994.

Buffalo State Hospital, Buffalo, NY - Construction began in 1872. The general layout of the hospital followed the symmetrical linear plan devised by Dr. Thomas Kirkbride (also known as the Kirkbride Plan), which included 16-foot tall rooms for adequate ventilation, a southern exposure for maximum sunlight, violent patients to be housed at the ends of the wings, and the building to be separated by sex on either side of the central administration area.

The turrets of The Village at Grand Traverse Commons rise above the trees not far from the center of Traverse City. Formerly the Traverse City State Hospital, it opened in 1885 as an Asylum for the Insane. Beloved by ghost hunters and architects (it is the last Kirkbride Building in the state),  the Commons now houses shops, restaurants, luxury condos, and extensive walking trails. Discover outdoor concerts and farmers markets in the summer and well-groomed lanes for a stroll in the winter.
