Mawu is a Dahomey Creator Goddess, associated with the Sun and Moon. She gives the breath of life and also created death. In one myth, an arrogant monkey, Awe, climbed up to heaven and then tried and failed to copy her life-giving feat. Mawu made him a bowl of porridge with the seed of death in it and reminded him that only she could give life and that she could also take it away.

Arianrhod (Celtic) is said to be able to shape shift into a large Owl, and through the great Owl-eyes, sees even into the darkness of the human subconscious and soul. The Owl symbolizes death and renewal, wisdom, moon magic, and initiations. She is said to move with strength and purpose through the night, her wings of comfort and healing spread to give solace to those who seek her.
