The Derby at Epsom was first run in 1780. Originally it was a celebration following the running of the Oaks and it was decided it should be named after the host, the 12th Earl of Derby. The first race was won by Diomed, a colt owned by Sir Charles Bunbury. The Derby was run on Thursday in late May or June but in 1838 it was moved to Wednesdays to accommodate the railway schedule.
