Stones Reef and Godrevy Lighthouse, St Ives Bay, Cornwall. You can guess what happened to shipping before the lighthouse was built. It's no coincidence there are two beaches nearby called "Dead Man's Cove" and one called "Hell's Mouth".
EAST WHEAL ROSE MINE: just outside St Newlyn East, Cornwall. 'On 9 July 1846 a disaster at the East Wheal Rose mine was caused by an unusually heavy thunderstorm which flooded the mine. Thirty-nine of the miners (mainly inhabitants of the village and its immediate vicinity) were drowned. The mine was eventually closed in 1881. After the disaster, villagers of St Newlyn East worked together and dug a pit in remembrance of the miners who died.' ✫ღ⊰n
