The Hunters Point Drydock, 1869. California Historical Society Collection 2012.1049. — at Hunters Point, San Francisco, California.
The California Gold Rush was first reported in a US east-coast newspaper in 1848. Thousands of people from around the world descended on California to try their luck at 'striking it rich'. This photograph, from 1850, shows ships in San Francisco Bay that had been abandoned by their crews for the gold fields. Many ships were eventually salvaged for their wood and furnishings, and used for buildings in San Francisco.
