Hans Grundig (Germany 1901-1958), Bildnis Helen Ernst, oil on canvas, 1934. Helen Ernst (Greece 1904-1948) was a German artist, sympathetic to Communism, whose work was declared "degenerate" by the Nazis. She resisted the regime, emigrated to the Netherlands, but with its occupation she was deported and sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp for more than 4 years. She died of tuberculosis as a result of her time there. Collection Staatliche Galerie Moritzburg, Halle (Saale), Germany.
