Boats leaving the port of Le Havre, France, 1856. Photo by Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884), an important early French photographer. Trained as a painter by some prominent artists, he switched to the medium of photography in the 1840s (today we'd call him an "early adopter"). He became in time the official photographer to Emperor Napoleon III.
