Rose Valland (1898-1980) was a French art historian.  Used by the Nazis to catalog all of the art they'd stolen, she secretly documented the arts original owners and current location and saved thousands of works of art.

Monument Men- photographs taken by Pennoyer during the Italian campaign conveys the spirit and determination of the monuments officers that led them to take on such a formidable task. Pennoyer recorded more than just the bravado of this eclectic army unit. Incorporating select objects and props, he captured the unique style and personality of each of these highly individualistic men.  Upper left: Capt. As allied forces fought the Nazis for control of Europe during World War II, an unlikely unit of American and British art experts formed the Allied Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives section (MFAA) to wage a shadow campaign. Tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves, these heroes became known as The Monuments Men. On February 7, 2014, the film The Monuments Men will be released.
