Walter Adolph Georg Gropius (1883-1969). German architect and founder of the Bauhaus School, who, along with Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Wright, is regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture. Is remembered not only by his various buildings but also by the district of Gropiusstadt in Berlin. He married Alma Mahler, widow of Gustav Mahler. Walter and Alma's daughter, Manon, died of polio at age 18. They divorced in 1920.

Wright believed in designing structures which were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was best exemplified by his design for Fallingwater (1935), which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture".
