The German ship Pamir which, in became the last commercial sailing ship to round Cape Horn. She capsized and sank in September 1957 in a hurricane off the Azores, with the loss of 80 crew . What a loss, both in lives and in this beautiful ship.

Gorch Fock - We ran alongside this tall ship along with at least a hundred other yachts when it came up the Chesapeake Bay for the Bicentennial. So beautiful!

32700 ton Scharnhorst as constructed: found to be very wet ships during trials, she and her sister Gneisenau later received raked 'Atlantic' bows and funnel caps.  The Germans saw them as battleships, the allies as battlecruisers on account of their high (32 knot) speed and relatively light (9 x 11 in) armament.

The Germans removed these symbols from their ships at the outbreak of the war, except Admiral Graf Spee that still had it when it was scuttled. This because it left Germany 21. August 1939, 12 days before the war broke out.
