AUGUSTE RODIN (French): The Burghers of Calais, 1884-89, Hirshhorn Museum, D.C. - commemorates an episode during the Hundred Years' War between England and France. Probably the best and certainly the most successful of Rodin's public monuments. he arrangement of the group, with its unorthodox massing and subtle internal rhythms, was not easily settled, and the completed monument, cast in bronze by the Le Blanc-Barbedienne foundry, was not unveiled in Calais until 1895. (met)

Auguste Rodin. The Burghers of Calais, 1884-95, London, commemorates an episode during the Hundred Years' War between England and France. The arrangement of the group, with its unorthodox massing and subtle internal rhythms, was not easily settled, and the completed monument, cast in bronze by the Le Blanc-Barbedienne foundry, was not unveiled in Calais until 1895. Rodin conceived the sculpture as a study in the varied and complex emotions under which all six men were laboring.
