Der Ursprung dieses Manta geht auf die Mitte der sechziger Jahre zurück, als der legendäre Ingenieur Giotto Bizzarrini den P538 Wettbewerbs-Prototyp entwickelte, um gegen Ford GT 40, Ferrari 250 P und Porsche 906 anzutreten. Angesichts dieser Gegner investierte Bizzarrini alle Ressourcen in das Projekt. Ein möglicher Erfolg in Le Mans schien zu verlockend - unter professionellen Gesichtspunkten, wie auch unter persönlichem Aspekt. Denn ein Sieg über Ferrari wäre ein allzu wichtiger Triumph…
