Before reading, have each student fold an unlined sheet of paper into 5 equal sections to make a chart and label the sections with the 5 senses. Next, read aloud a poem from the book, guiding the child to list on her chart the sensory words that describe winter. Then draw a five-column chart on bulletin board paper and lead students to share the sensory words they have collected. Keep the chart near your writing center to inspire descriptive winter writing!
