The Sovereigns Orb is also known as Charles II’s Orb, as it was made for his Coronation in 1661. The orb represents sovereign power, the cross on top denoting Christian rule. During the Coronation ceremony it is placed in the Sovereign’s right hand by the Archbishop of Canterbury before being returned to the altar. It is carried during the procession out of Westminster Abbey in the Sovereign’s left hand.
