A mechanical typewriter produces a piece of paper with information on it, and that, in 1946, had to be given to someone who could initiate a chain of time-consuming transmission ending with receipt by the intended addressee of the information. At the same spot occupied by the girl in this photo, another typist can today send a “How-are-you-doing?” message to a friend on the far side of the world, and it will be received in seconds.
