Customs House - New York City, New York 'Africa' Sculpture by Daniel Chester French 'Africa' is a massive slumbering and semi-nude female figure. The sculpture was made between 1903 and 1907. Daniel Chester French was the primary sculptor. He was assisted by Adolph A. Weinman & Andrew O'Connor Jr. The Piccirilli Brothers Marble Carving Studios did the actual work. Cass Gilbert was the architect. The sculpture is made of Tennessee marble with a granite base.
