The Stratus Project by rvtr. The Stratus Project is an ongoing body of research that develops kinetic, environment-responsive envelope systems. The first prototype uses smart surfaces and responsive technologies through fabrication methods in the development of a thick suspended ceiling that produces a light and air-based architectural environment using distributed technologies and systems to sense energy and movement flows, tempered by occupant-responsive feedback to define envelopes of…

In this research project an actuated shape-changing surface was developed. Investigations into its expressive qualities revealed the surface’s ability to move in space following programmed variations in terms of texture and topology patterns. The surface was developed as part of my graduation project at the Media Technology MSc Programme (Leiden University 2012) under the supervision of Edwin van der Heide. More info: alicebodanzky.com

Matthew Gardiner’s specialty is oribotics, the fusion of origami and technology to create origami that is controlled by robot technology (paper that will fold and unfold on command). The concept of the mechanics which transforms the paper is based on the human hand and uses a simple push/pull mechanism to actuate a five-petalled flower. The Award will allow Gardiner to participate in a collaborative Ars Electronica Futurelab residency in Austria that specialises in interaction design.
