AN IMPORTANT GROSSES MESSER MEDIEVAL SWORD Also known as a grosse messer. Very rarely encountered on the market. Of characteristic form and construction, the full tang and finely faceted pommel and guard with original wooden slab grips, with projecting "nagel" guard of pierced, polylobate form. The single-edge blade of flattened wedge section with expanded and profiled back-edge, displaying clear evidence of layering, perhaps pattern-welded. Late 15th century.
